ART DEPARTMENT TRAINEE

Synanthropic School2022

The project brief was to design a single-form entry primary school that fosters community engagement and reconnects children with nature. Inspired by research on urban wildscapes and their role in children's literature as spaces of independence and adventure, the school aims to address the lack of natural contact in urban childhoods. It offers a model that blends education with ecological awareness, focusing on cohabitation between humans and non-humans. Children will learn about biodiversity, ecosystems, and synanthropes (species of wild animals or plants that live near and benefit from an association with humans) while engaging in hands- on activities to enhance local habitats.

Located on a former car park in Lambeth, adjacent to Archbishop's Park and Oasis City Farm, the site integrates an existing gardening club and preserves surrounding London plane and sycamore trees. The school serves 236 pupils, with an assembly hall, support spaces and a community kitchen featuring an intensive green roof for growing and cooking food. On weekends, this space welcomes the wider community.

The buildings are elevated to free the ground floor for wildlife, and arranged to prioritize natural light and ventilation. The layout includes a nursery/reception, play areas and administrative spaces on the ground floor. Key Stage 1 classrooms and a science lab are on the first floor, accessible via a treetop walkway, while Key Stage 2 classrooms occupy the second floor. Each classroom offers both indoor and outdoor learning areas, fostering a strong connection to the environment.
