Waterloo Theatre Set Reusing/Upcycling Centre2019

The project brief was to design a 21st century ‘Inn- Yard Playhouse’ for London: a social hub that offers accomodation, whilst providing a platform for small- scale performance.

The centre consists of a studio and living space for a set designer who runs a community theatre set reusing/upcycling workshop.

Located in Lower Marsh, a vibrant market street south of Waterloo Station, the site benefits from high foot and vehicle traffic, enhancing project visibility. Its proximity to various theatres facilitates the donation of props and structures, reducing transportation carbon footprint. Heavier items can be moved via an existing underground system or a nearby crane. Materials donated by local theatres will be integrated into the building and utilized by workshop users.

A core steel grid structure will provide circulation and storage across all floors. A pulley system, reminiscent of theatre backstages, will enable movement between floors. The metal structure complements Waterloo's industrial character while contrasting with neighboring Victorian buildings.

Public-access floors dedicated to the community workshop and theatre performances will be visible and easily accessible, while the living and studio spaces will maintain privacy. Once a year, a community theatre festival will transform the ground floor entrance and donation area into a stage, engaging the public and taking over the surrounding streets.
